The University of Basel Fellowship, through its Ukrainian Research in Switzerland (URIS) program, is now inviting applications for the 2026 URIS Fellowships.
The academic initiative offers scholars specializing in Ukraine a fully funded six-month research and teaching residency in Switzerland.

About the URIS Fellowship
The URIS fellowship is developed to enhance Ukraine-related research within Swiss academia and it provides scholars with the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research, teach a university-level course, and contribute to international academic discourse.
Fellows will spend a semester at the University of Basel, choosing between:
Spring Semester (January–June 2026)
Autumn Semester (July–December 2026)
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows will receive:
- A monthly stipend of CHF 4,000
- Visa fee reimbursement, accident and health insurance in Switzerland
Round-trip travel from their home country to Basel. - A Swiss Federal Railways half-fare travel card and coverage for all work-related travel within Switzerland
- Shared office space and full access to the university’s digital resources
Note: Fellows are expected to reside in Basel for the duration of the program and actively participate in academic events, lectures, and workshops organized by URIS.
Who Can Apply?
The URIS Fellowship welcomes scholars from the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences, regardless of career stage. Applicants should have:
- A PhD and an outstanding academic record
- University teaching experience and the ability to conduct a Ukraine-related course (1.5 hours per week in English or German)
- A research project focusing on Ukraine’s history, politics, society, or culture
- A willingness to engage with the URIS network and Switzerland’s research community on Ukraine
