The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is a flagship initiative of the Korean Government to strengthen global education exchange and promote cultural ties.

For the 2026 academic year, South Korea will welcome 2,200 international students across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. Undergraduate programs typically last 4 to 6 years, which includes a mandatory one-year Korean language program.

Graduate programs open in February 2026 (Master’s and PhD), with structured academic and language training to prepare scholars for life and study in Korea.

  • Hold citizenship from a country invited by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED).
  • Have an excellent academic record:
    • At least 80% score on a 100-point scale OR
    • Be ranked in the top 20% of your class OR
    • Maintain a minimum CGPA:
      • 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0.
  • Be under 25 years old (for undergraduates).
  • Be in good physical and mental health to complete the program.
  • Graduate applicants (for 2026 intake) must be under 40 years old.
Scholarship Benefits

The Global Korea Scholarship 2026 provides a full financial package, including:

  • Airfare: Economy class ticket to and from South Korea
  • Full Tuition Fees covered by NIIED and the host university
  • Monthly Living Stipend: Approx. 900,000 KRW (≈ $9,853/year)
  • Korean Language Training: Fully funded for one year
  • Health Insurance and medical support
  • Settlement & Completion Allowances
  • TOPIK (Korean Language Proficiency Test) fee support
  • Accommodation support from universities
Required Documents

Applicants must prepare the following documents:

  • Completed online application form
  • Personal statement & study plan
  • High school transcripts and graduation certificate
  • Letter of recommendation (sealed and signed)
  • Applicant agreement form
  • Personal medical assessment form
  • Consent to collect and use personal data

Note: Some universities and embassies may request additional documents. Always check the official guidelines of the embassy or institution you are applying to.

Application Process (Step by Step)

You can apply through either of the two tracks:

  1. Embassy Track
    • Apply via the Korean Embassy in your home country.
    • Submit all required documents to the embassy.
    • Shortlisted candidates will be nominated to NIIED for final selection.
  2. University Track
    • Apply directly to participating Korean universities.
    • If shortlisted, your application will be forwarded to NIIED.
