INTERSOS, a humanitarian NGO committed to supporting communities affected by crises and exclusion, is currently recruiting a Country Programme Coordinator and Representative to lead its operations in Nigeria.

Location: Maiduguri, Nigeria
Start Date: 15 July 2025
Contract Duration: 12 months (renewable)

The organization places particular emphasis on reaching the most vulnerable populations in emergency settings.

Humanitarian Context in Northeast Nigeria

In Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States, conflict and instability have triggered a protracted humanitarian crisis:

7.8 million people require humanitarian aid
2.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs)
5.1 million expected to face acute food insecurity during the 2025 lean season
2.5 million malnourished children
Extensive gender-based violence (GBV)
Severely damaged infrastructure and elevated risks of epidemics

INTERSOS has responded with integrated, multisectoral programming funded by partners including BHA, ECHO, and WFP.

 Role Summary

The selected candidate will oversee INTERSOS’s mission in Nigeria, providing strategic direction, ensuring program quality, and representing the organization to authorities, donors, and partners.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Coordination

Assess and interpret the political and humanitarian landscape
Develop and implement mission strategies aligned with INTERSOS’s global approach
Lead the design of new proposals and fundraising efforts
Supervise project managers and mission support teams
Build partnerships with donors, INGOs, and local actors

Representation & Advocacy

Represent INTERSOS in high-level forums and coordination platforms
Ensure legal recognition and compliance in Nigeria
Liaise with donors and advocate for support of INTERSOS’s priorities

Programme Oversight & Compliance

Oversee project planning, budgeting, and execution
Guarantee timely, accurate reporting and compliance with donor requirements
Monitor progress and ensure quality across programs

Team & HR Management
  • Mentor and manage senior programme staff
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluation
  • Foster a collaborative and values-driven team culture
Security Management

Update and implement the country-level security plan
Monitor risks and lead emergency response protocols

Candidate Profile

Education:

  • Advanced degree in International Relations, Development Studies, or related field
Experience:
  • At least 5 years in humanitarian programme leadership
  • Proven ability to manage large teams and complex grants
  • Experience in proposal writing and financial oversight
Skills & Attributes:
  • Strategic and analytical mindset
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and leadership capabilities
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles and INTERSOS’s mission
    Fluent in English
