Fully Funded DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship 2025 offers a great opportunity for aspiring leaders and individuals to Study in Germany and get their foreign education dreams fulfilled.

The German government, through DAAD, is offering the fully funded Leadership for Africa Scholarship to outstanding African students who aspire to pursue a postgraduate degree at a university in Germany.

This fully funded scholarship provides a 100% tuition waiver, an annual stipend of €11,904, and additional support for accommodation and living expenses. Successful applicants may also receive monthly allowances for dependents (spouse and/or children) and annual study and travel grants. Furthermore, recipients will benefit from a free German language course in their first year.

About the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship

The Leadership for Africa (LfA) Scholarship is designed to empower young refugees and national scholars from Cameroon, Senegal, Togo, South Sudan, and Uganda by supporting their academic advancement in Germany.

Given ongoing conflicts and displacement in several African nations, the scholarship will  equip future leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to their home countries’ development. The program includes a mandatory training component in good governance, civil society engagement, and career development, which scholarship recipients must complete alongside their studies.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree that qualifies them for a Master’s program at a German university
  • Have achieved a minimum Second Class Upper (2:1) degree
  • The scholarship specifically targets two groups:
    1) Refugees
    Refugee applicants must:
    Have official refugee status, granted before April 2, 2024
    Reside in Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, or Mauritania
    Have completed a Bachelor’s degree
    2) National Scholars
    Non-refugee applicants must:
    Be citizens of Cameroon, Senegal, Togo, South Sudan, or Uganda
    Currently reside in one of the eligible countries
    Have completed a Bachelor’s degree
Important Notes:

Medicine graduates are only eligible for Public Health or Biomedical Science programs.
Fine Arts, Architecture, and related fields have separate DAAD scholarship opportunities.

Scholarship Benefits & Duration of the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship 

The DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship covers:

  • Up to 6 months of German language training before studies begin (includes language test fees, pocket money, and accommodation during the course)
  • Monthly stipend of €992
  • Comprehensive health, accident, and liability insurance
    Travel and study allowances
  • Mandatory “LEAD!” training program
  • If applicable, additional financial support for accommodation and family members

Required Documents

Applicants must submit:

  1. Completed DAAD online application form (via the DAAD portal)
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Maximum 3 pages (Use the Europass format: Europass CV)
  3. Motivation letter (1-3 pages) detailing academic and career aspirations
  4. Study Course Profile Form, listing three Master’s programs
  5. Proof of language proficiency (for the chosen programs)
  6. University degree certificates and transcripts
  7. Copy of passport or national ID
  8. For refugees: Proof of refugee status (UNHCR registration or official asylum certificate)
  9. Other relevant documents (e.g., work experience, scholarships, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters)
