Applications are now open for the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026, a prestigious and fully funded opportunity for professionals from developing countries who are passionate about ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
This international fellowship spans nine months and is split into two intensive phases.

What Does the UN Nippon Fellowship 2026 Cover?
This fellowship is fully funded, offering the following financial and academic support:
- Round-trip economy airfare
- Monthly stipend for living expenses
- Visa and local transportation costs
- Medical insurance
- Accommodation expenses
- $100 monthly book allowance
Fellowship Structure
Phase One – Professional Training (3 Months)
From March/April to June 2026, fellows will undertake research and training at the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
Phase Two – Academic Research (6 Months)
From July to December 2026, fellows will pursue advanced academic research at a participating host institution in countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and others.
Post-Fellowship Commitment
Upon completing the program, fellows are expected to return to their home countries and apply their knowledge to contribute to national ocean governance and policy development.
Host Institutions
Fellows will be matched with one of 32 globally recognized academic and research institutions based on their research interests and professional background.
Eligibility Criteria for UN Nippon Fellowship 2026
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must:
- Be between 25 and 40 years old
- Hold at least a first university degree
- Be a mid-level professional from a government agency or non-governmental organization
- Be a citizen of a developing country
- Show a strong interest in ocean affairs, maritime law, or related fields
